Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Centre, Computers for Schools Kenya (CfSK) and African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD) have come together to organize “International Training on Sustainable Environmentally Friendly Management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)”. The training is scheduled to take place at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, AICAD Centre from 17th February, 2016 – 19th February, 2016 in Nairobi Kenya.

Electrical and electronic waste has become the world’s fastest-growing source of waste and health hazard. The environmentally responsible management of WEEE is consequently a goal being pursued by governments and businesses worldwide. Eco-friendly waste-disposal and recycling mechanisms will mitigate WEEE’s negative impacts on the environment and populations’ health, but will also create new employment opportunities while recycling critical raw materials and increasing business efficiency.

This training is designed for people working in the field of ICT, academicians, development professionals, environmental advocates, policy makers, non-governmental organizations other stakeholders to understand the management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in environmental friendly manner. Through this hands-on, action-oriented course, participants will earn the practical reality of the “Four Rs”: Reduce, Reuse, Refurbish, and Recycle. Participants will also be equipped with frame of reference to trace the problem of e-waste from the global perspective to their home countries, and empowered to take action. We will detail how the WEEE Centre was established and what people can do to advocate for similar facilities and development of e-waste policy and legislative frameworks to address this serious environmental hazard. The course will additionally include field visits and practical sessions at East and Central Africa’s biggest e-waste recycling center.
