Training and Incubation Opportunities for SMEs and Self-Help Groups on Digital Learning Devices Maintenance and e-Waste Management

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) - Positivo BGH Consortium currently contracted by the Government of Kenya through Information, Communication and Technology Authority (ICTA) to supply, deliver, install, test and commission goods and related services for implementation of the Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) in public primary schools within the following 21 counties: Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu, Nakuru, Kericho, Nyandarua, Muranga, Laikipia, Baringo, Machakos, Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, Embu, Wajir, Tharaka-Nithi, Garissa, Mandera, Meru, Kirinyaga, and Nyeri.

In its quest to provide efficient DLP devices maintenance and e-waste management programme to the deployed devices, the Consortium partnered with Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Centre (WEEE Centre), an IT integrated solutions and electronic waste management company. WEEE Centre is the leading, registered and the only fully compliant (NEMA Accredited) e-waste facility in East Africa, offering downstream Secure Data Destruction, IT Asset Recovery and IT Asset Disposition and Recycling.

As a fundamental core value, WEEE Centre runs an environmentally friendly operation and manages electronic waste for a sustainable development through Reduction, Refurbishment and Recycling of e-waste. The organization is committed to environmental conservation by offering efficient, safe and reliable disposal of e-Waste.

To empower the youth, women and people with special needs, JKUAT - Positivo BGH Consortium in collaboration with WEEE Centre, invites interested SMEs/self-help groups from the above listed counties to apply for sponsored training and incubation on maintenance of laptops, projectors, tablets and other accessories. Shortlisted SMEs will be trained and integrated in an incubation programme to empower them with technical skills for equipment maintenance, financial literacy, website administration, online jobs and business diversity skills. The main purpose of this programme is to provide the participants with an opportunity to improve their social and economic status by participating in the DLP programme to provide repair, maintenance and e-waste management services for gainful employment.

Requirements for training participants:

  1. Need to be legally registered as a Small and Micro Enterprise/ Self Help Group
  2. Must be an active entity with a verifiable office and workshop section.
  3. The entity must be involved in IT work and/or repair of electronic devices
  4. Membership of the entity must be of at least 5 participants aged between 18-35
  5. Proof of registration, presence and operations in county of interest
